Recuva File Recovery

Recuva File RecoveryFew things are as frustrating as failing to a retrieve a file you've labored so much because of a bad disk sector, a sudden power fluctuation or a malicious worm program or virus that corrupted the file or made it inaccessible, or accidentally deleted. Good thing there are file recovery tools in the market like the Recuva Data Recovery software from software developer Piriform. The Recuva makes a decent effort to recover files accidentally deleted from your windows PC, a digital camera card or even your portable MP3 player. Nice thing about the software is that it's a freeware.

Recuva Features

  • The software can recover virtually any file like image, video, music, document, emails and compressed files in PC hard drives, external drives, flash drives and memory cards used in mobile devices. It supports the recovery of photos taken prosumer and professional cameras such as the Nikon EAQ and Canon RAW (.CRW) file formats. It can access iPod drives as well.
  • Recuva has a dual scan levels. You can activate its deep scan facility that essentially digs deeper into the hard drive to recover files it may have missed with the default first level recovery scan.
  • Recuva can recover files in damaged or reformatted disks as well as hard drive crashes so you can ease up your anxieties over important files your have failed to back up. It uses the hidden index files that Windows uses on any storage drive so that even if the index is damaged or overwritten in any reformatting process. That's because these files often remain in tact even when reformatted which only involved overwriting the index record. Recuva recovers the files without referring to the index. But this only works when using soft or Quick Format. Recuva shows the list of recoverable files and estimates its chances of success.
  • In the event of a power failure before saving a Word document, chances are the file won't get recovered. Recuva makes a good attempt to rebuild Word files from their temp files.

Recuva User Friendliness

Recuva carries a simple and nicely-laid out user interface with a wizard tool to get you started. Installation is a breeze and configuring it gets sufficient support from the same wizard. Upon launching of the software, you get prompted on what file types you want recovered and whether you want Deep Scan activated. But even with its default settings, it works without a hitch.

Recuva Summary

If you need a basic no-frills file recovery tool that works to recover accidentally deleted files, nothing beats Recuva which is currently one of the few that's offered free of charge. It has a small memory resident footprint and could well be the best in the market despite not supporting SCSI drives.
